A fresh coat of paint on the city’s bollards may not sound like award-winning stuff. But it was part of the story when Truro’s name was read out in Rochdale.

Truro has been awarded Gold and named Winner of the Large Town category at the national Britain in Bloom Awards 2026, Truro City Council has announced.

The ceremony took place in Rochdale on Tuesday evening (20 October).

Who was there for Truro

Representing the city on the night were the Mayor of Truro, Councillor Chris Wells, Stephen Kirkpatrick, Lead Countryside Ranger at Truro City Council, and Truro in Bloom Committee representatives Godfrey Mortimer, Peggy Mortimer and Janie Godfrey-Ryle.

What the award recognises

According to the council, the result reflects the hard work, resources and dedication that go into looking after Truro’s parks, gardens, floral displays and green spaces all year round.

It also recognises the volunteers who care for their local community. This year they took on the job of repainting all the bollards in the city centre and beyond.

The council has thanked its Parks and Gardens department, the Truro in Bloom Committee, Truro BID, Biffa, volunteers, community groups, local businesses and everyone who works year-round to make what it calls “Our Great Little City” a vibrant and welcoming place for all.

The council says the achievement supports Objective 2, ‘Our Environment’, of its 2026 to 2030 Strategy, which commits it to maintaining and improving the city’s green spaces.

Another ceremony this week

There is more to come before the week is out. The South West in Bloom awards ceremony takes place this Friday (23 October) in Newquay, and the council has wished good luck to everyone involved.
