Graham ‘Granite’ Waters, Former Pirates Player, Dies Aged 76
Many across West Cornwall and beyond will be saddened to hear of the death of Graham ‘Granite’ Waters, a much-loved figure in the Cornish rugby community, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 76.
A Force on the Field
Graham was known for being straight-talking, honest and strong, earning him the nickname ‘Granite’ – a name that stuck throughout his long rugby career and beyond. A gentleman as well as a powerhouse, he left a lasting impression on all who met him.
He attended Cape Cornwall School, where he came under the guidance of Derek Small. His rugby journey began at St Just RFC, before he made the leap to Penzance & Newlyn RFC at the start of the 1974/75 season, encouraged by Colin Dymond.
Despite being 6’1″ – short for a lock forward – Graham’s 15-and-a-half stone frame made him a formidable presence. He became a 1st XV regular almost immediately, racking up 41 appearances in his first season alone. In total, he wore the Pirates jersey 296 times before returning to St Just, where he remained involved as a committee member.
Cup Final Glory
One of Graham’s proudest moments on the pitch came in 1976, when the Pirates won the Cornwall KO Cup for the first time. The final, played at Camborne, saw the underdogs edge out favourites Redruth 4-3 in a tense encounter, with Graham playing his part in the second row.
A 900-Mile Walk for a Good Cause
In 1988, after retiring from playing, Graham took on a remarkable challenge to raise money for the Pirates and the Cancer & Leukaemia in Childhood Trust (CLIC). He walked the length of Britain – from John O’Groats to Land’s End – a journey of 900 miles. He was joined on the walk by Richard Brighton and Adam Dorey, who also took turns driving a back-up van.
Final Years
Graham later settled in Heamoor and worked as a builder before retiring. In recent years, his health had been in decline. After a short stay at Benoni Nursing Home in St Just, he passed away at Treliske Hospital.
Details of Graham’s funeral will be shared once confirmed. In the meantime, sincere condolences have been extended to his family.
