Plain Clothes Police Ride Cornwall Buses to Watch for Trouble
Police have been carrying out preventative patrols on local bus services in South East Cornwall as part of efforts to tackle inappropriate behaviour and disturbances.
Officers in plain clothes recently travelled on buses between Saltash, Looe and Torpoint. While on board, they observed passengers and looked out for behaviour that could make others feel uncomfortable. This included repeat or unwanted attention, as well as people acting drunk and disorderly.
What officers saw on board
Inspector Ned Bowie, who heads up neighbourhood police teams in the area, said officers reported that the atmosphere was largely positive.
“The officers reported that overall, the atmosphere was very positive and there were no signs of predatory or concerning behaviour on this occasion,” he said.
More patrols planned for 2026
Despite the positive findings, Ned said police are aware that this type of behaviour can and does happen.
“That’s why we’ll continue to carry out plain clothes operations like this in 2026, at different times and on different routes,” he added.
Ned also said the force remains committed to tackling serious violence, violence against women and girls, and sexual offences.
“Plain clothes operations are another tactic that our officers use to pursue perpetrators, deter offending and ultimately create safer spaces for everyone,” he said.
Police said they continue to work closely with partners, including bus companies, to gather intelligence and take action against those causing harm.
