Gas Pipe Upgrade Works Under Way in Truro Until February

Essential gas pipe upgrade works are currently under way in the St Austell Street area of Truro, with a number of road closures in place until early February.

The work is being carried out by Wales & West Utilities and is aimed at ensuring gas continues to be supplied safely and reliably to homes and businesses for years to come.

Where the road closures are

Between 5th January and 9th February, the following roads are closed:

• New Bridge Street, between Duke Street and St Clement Street

• Duke Street, between Boscawen Street and New Bridge Street

• St Mary’s Street, between High Cross and New Bridge Street

• Mitchell Hill, between St Clement Street and James Place

Multi way traffic lights are also in operation on St Clement Street, St Austell Street and Furniss Close.

Diversion routes are clearly signposted, and motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through the area.

Businesses remain open

Despite the disruption, local businesses are remaining open throughout the works.

Cornwall Council has worked closely with Wales & West Utilities to agree the traffic management measures for the duration of the work.

Why the work is happening

The project is described as vital to keeping gas flowing safely and reliably across the area, both now and in the future.

Natalie Raphael, who is managing the gas pipe upgrade work for Wales & West Utilities, said:

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”

When the work is expected to finish

If everything goes to plan, the work is expected to be completed by 9th February, although dates may be subject to change.
