Yellow Weather Warning Today: Drivers Urged to Take Extra Care
Drivers across parts of the UK are being warned to stay alert on the roads today, Thursday 5th February, as heavy rain, strong winds and flooding are forecast.
Yellow weather warnings are in force across areas of Scotland, Wales and England. Motoring experts say the conditions are likely to bring poor visibility, surface water and debris, all of which increase the risk of collisions and breakdowns.
Advice from motoring experts
Mike Thompson, Chief Operating Officer at Leasing Options, said driving in heavy rain and floods can significantly increase the risk on the roads.
He advised drivers to check their vehicles before setting off, including making sure windscreen wipers are working properly and replacing them if needed. Tyres should meet the legal tread depth of 1.6mm and be correctly inflated, as they play a key role in maintaining control on wet roads.
Mike also recommended checking local weather reports and avoiding areas that are flooded or at risk of flooding.
When driving in wet conditions, motorists are urged to reduce their speed and leave more space between vehicles, as stopping distances increase in the rain. Keeping air conditioning on can help prevent windows from misting, while clean windows and dipped headlights can improve visibility in torrential rain.
Drivers are also advised to stay alert, check mirrors regularly and be mindful of large or fast moving vehicles that may create spray.
Five ways drivers can prepare for yellow warning weather
Keep your vehicle covered
Parking in a garage or undercover area can help protect vehicles from harsh weather and flying debris. If this is not possible, using a car cover or tarpaulin can reduce the risk of scratches. Parking in sheltered areas and avoiding power lines, trees and unstable structures is also recommended.
Check for balding tyres
Tyres are critical in wet weather due to their role in stopping distance. Tyre pressure should be checked regularly, especially in cold or wet conditions. A simple tread check can help identify when a tyre needs replacing.
Get an emergency car kit sorted
An emergency kit can be useful all year round, particularly during severe weather. Suggested items include warm clothing and blankets, a phone charger, food such as biscuits, and basic car maintenance tools. Reflective triangles or LED flares and a waterproof bag for important documents may also help if you are stranded.
Protect your windows and wipers
Windscreen wipers should be replaced at least once a year or sooner if they leave streaks. Drivers are also encouraged to check for small chips in glass and repair them before storms, as cracks can spread quickly during heavy rain or high winds.
Secure windshields and loose parts
Strong winds can damage loose parts on vehicles. Drivers are advised to make sure windows and sunroofs are properly sealed and to remove or secure roof racks, antennas or other accessories that could be torn off during a storm.
