Struggles to Call for Help
A member of the public who raised the alarm on social media also attempted to call 999 from the beach but was unable to connect at the time. HM Coastguard Padstow said that normally it should be possible to dial 999 regardless of network coverage in the area.
Safety Warning as Conditions Set to Worsen
The coastguard has reminded people that Porthcothan Bay is not currently covered by RNLI lifeguards. They added that conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend, making the sea even more hazardous.
People are being advised to choose beaches with RNLI lifeguards on duty, particularly over the Easter holiday period.
What To Do In An Emergency
HM Coastguard Padstow has reiterated that if anyone sees a person in trouble along the coast, they should call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
