Penzance Triathlete Katie Walker Wins Ironman Bolton Again

Balancing a demanding day job with elite endurance sport is hard enough. Doing it well enough to win the same championship two years in a row is something else entirely.

Katie Walker, 26, from Penzance, is the Ironman Bolton 70.3 women’s champion for the second year running. The trainee accountant completed the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run in a time of 4:31:39.

A rapid rise through the ranks

Katie has packed a lot into a short space of time. Over the last three years she has won British and European Ironman 70.3 age group titles and finished ninth at the 2025 World Championships.

Sport has always played a significant role in her life, but she only stepped up from triathlons to Ironman racing in May 2024, after deciding she wanted to challenge herself over longer distances.

How the funding helps

2026 marks Katie’s second year as a GLL Sport Foundation (GSF) athlete, which gives her free training access to any Better leisure centre in Cornwall and across the UK.

“Triathlon is an expensive sport and getting help from GSF makes a real difference,” said Katie. “The funding has made swimming and gym sessions far more accessible and, as essential components of my weekly training programme, that’s very important.”

She was also keen to thank the people around her.

“I am incredibly grateful for the support of my partner, family and Mark King, my coach. I am also fortunate to be sponsored by local businesses including Whirlwind Sports, Giant Helston and Born Bound, alongside GSF.

“Their encouragement, combined with the dedication and commitment I bring to my training each week, has enabled me to make rapid progress within the sport in a relatively short period of time. I am excited to continue building on these achievements and see what the future holds.”

A record year for Cornwall athletes

Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs nine leisure centres in Cornwall on behalf of the council. GSF was first launched in 2008, and 178 Cornwall-based athletes have been selected for funding in 2026, the highest number yet.

Karen Edmond, Community Sport Manager, praised the achievement.

“Huge congratulations to Katie on her amazing back-to-back championship achievement,” said Karen. “She does a lot of her training at St Ives Leisure Centre and is a real inspiration to everyone there. We’ll be following her progress with keen interest in the months and years to come.”
