St Newlyn East fun dog show hunts for a Top Dog for RSPCA

There is a title going spare at St Newlyn East this bank holiday Monday, and any dog with a waggy tail and a couple of pound coins can have a crack at it. The RSPCA Cornwall Branch is bringing its Fun Dog Show to the St Newlyn East Parish Show and Community Showcase on Monday 31 August, with ten classes running through the day and every entry fee going to help animals in the county.

It takes place at St Newlyn East Village Hall on Neeham Road, near Newquay (TR8 5LE). Registration opens on the day at 10:00am, the first class starts at 10:30am, and entry is £2 per dog, per class. Rosettes and certificates go to the top three in every class.

Ten classes, and one for the children too

Whatever your dog is best at, there is probably a class with its name on it. The line-up runs across the day, with timings the organisers say are approximate:

• 10:30am, Prettiest Pooch (best female)
• 10:50am, Handsome Hound (best male)
• 11:10am, Pawsitively Perfect Puppy (under 12 months)
• 11:30am, Fluffs and Scruffs (best coat)
• 11:50am, Best Young Handler (children under 12 years)
• 1:00pm, Rocking Rescue (best rescue dog)
• 1:20pm, Golden Oldie (best senior over 8 years)
• 1:40pm, Waggiest Happiest Tail
• 2:00pm, Star Performer (best trick)
• 2:20pm, St Newlyn East’s Top Dog (open to all)

There is a 50 minute break from 12:10pm, and the classes wrap up at around 2:40pm. The Best Young Handler class puts the children in the ring, so it is one for families as much as for the dogs.

The rest of the parish show

The dog show sits inside a bigger day out. A pop-up café opens at 8:30am, and the Community Showcase runs from 11:00am to 4:00pm, with live music, stalls, games, a raffle, ice cream and more to keep everyone busy while the judging goes on. Where the money goes

Every penny raised from the Fun Dog Show goes straight to the branch, which is celebrating 30 years this year. As a self-funded branch, RSPCA Cornwall relies on days like this to keep supporting animals that need rehoming, treatment and care across the county.
