A call just before half past five
Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked at 5.33pm to a report of a woman with a hip injury at Venton Cove. It was the team’s 55th tasking of the year. Volunteers were quickly on scene and found the casualty in a lot of pain. She told them her hip had dislocated.
Getting pain relief to a casualty on the rocks
With the woman unable to move safely, the coastguard team began casualty care and asked the ambulance service for urgent pain relief. A tri-service first responder arrived first, followed shortly after by two ambulance service responders. Between them they were able to ease some of the pain, which allowed the team to slowly move the casualty onto a stretcher.
From there, the volunteers carried her carefully across the rocks and off the beach to a waiting ambulance.
Thanks to Venton farmhouse
The team thanked the first responders for attending, and had special praise for the owners of Venton farmhouse, who let the rescue use their garden as a rendezvous point for arriving crews. Once the casualty was safely away, they put the kettle on, providing tea and biscuits to everyone who had taken part.
