If you are heading out this morning, take a coat. Cornwall wakes up to a grey, wet Thursday, with the first proper rain in a while arriving just as the new school term starts today. Stick with it, though, because the week’s weather turns a good deal brighter by the time the weekend comes around.

Today

Overcast skies and light rain set the tone, with the highest chance of a downpour early on (around 80% at 6am). Highs reach a mild 22°C, feeling a touch cooler at about 21°C. It stays humid, and visibility drops to poor at times as the murk sits over the county, so give yourself extra time on the roads. Wind gusts up to 28mph add to the damp, blustery feel.

Tonight

The cloud hangs around overnight but the rain eases off, with only a 10 to 20% chance of a shower. It stays notably mild, holding at around 18°C, so no chill to speak of before Friday morning.

Friday 4 September

A brighter note creeps in. Cloud dominates the morning, with a 50% chance of rain first thing, then some afternoon sun breaks through. Highs of 20°C. The night turns fresher, dropping to 10°C, and it is the breeziest day of the run so far with gusts up to 32mph.

The weekend

This is where it gets good. Saturday brings sunny intervals, highs of 20°C, just a 10% chance of rain and light winds gusting only 17mph, so a proper still, settled day. Sunday goes one better on the mercury, climbing to 22°C with more sunny intervals, though there is a 30% chance of a shower creeping in by the evening and gusts nudging back up to 23mph.

The week ahead

Monday keeps the sunny intervals going at 20°C. Then Tuesday stands out as the wet, windy odd one out, with light showers, a 60% chance of rain around 7am and the strongest gusts of the whole spell at 34mph. Wednesday settles again to sunny intervals but slips to 18°C.

After a soggy start, the trend is firmly towards a drier, brighter Cornwall, though Tuesday’s showers and those 34mph gusts are a reminder that autumn is edging its way in.
