Cornwall Airport Newquay opens doors to future pilots
For a week this summer, a group of Year 6 to Year 13 pupils swapped the classroom for the airfield, climbing into the control tower at Cornwall Airport Newquay and getting a close-up look at the airport’s fire engines. Now the same experience is coming back on a regular basis, with British Young Pilots returning to run a series of Sunday Clubs for anyone who fancies a taste of life in the skies.

Sunday Clubs return this autumn
Cornwall Airport Newquay has confirmed that British Young Pilots will run fortnightly Sunday Clubs at the airport over the coming months, starting on Sunday 27 September. The sessions are classroom-based and led by industry professionals, with the aim of introducing the world of aviation to what could be the county’s next generation of aviators.
What young aviators can expect
The sessions cover a mix of hands-on and classroom learning, including:
- Aircraft simulator sessions
- Flying and navigation basics, from physics and meteorology through to practical flying skills
- Making friends and meeting like-minded people
- Aviation-themed activities and lessons
From Wings to a pilot’s licence
New starters begin with the Wings syllabus, which runs for one term. From there, students can progress to the intermediate stage, covering Modules A to D, before moving on to the advanced stage, Modules E to H. Once the advanced syllabus is complete, students are at the standard needed to start working towards their pilot exams and a National Private Pilot’s Licence.
