The hunt is on for Newquay’s next Town Crier

Published On: 4 September 2026Last Updated: 4 September 2026By

Every civic occasion in Newquay needs someone to open it properly, in a voice loud enough to carry across the Killacourt. That job has just come up, and Newquay Town Council wants to hear from whoever thinks they can fill it.

What the role actually involves

The council is inviting applications for the role of Town Crier, the town’s official ceremonial ambassador. It is looking for someone with strong public speaking skills, a genuine interest in community engagement and a willingness to keep alive a tradition that stretches back centuries.

Whoever gets the job will represent the council at civic events, community celebrations, commemorations and official engagements throughout the year. The list of duties is a full one. It covers delivering proclamations and announcements, welcoming dignitaries and visitors, supporting mayoral events, promoting local initiatives and generally acting as an ambassador for Newquay.

Filling some very big shoes

Newquay Town Council Mayor Drew Creek paid tribute to the outgoing Town Crier, Simon Anderson Jones, and said his successor would have a hard act to follow.

“Newquay has been so lucky to have had Simon Anderson Jones as our Town Crier. He was truly spectacular, and whoever steps into the role will have some very big shoes to fill. But that’s exactly what makes this such an exciting opportunity,” Drew said.

“This is a wonderful chance for someone who loves Newquay and enjoys being out among people to become a valued and visible part of our town’s life, helping to celebrate our proudest moments, support our community events and carry on a civic tradition we hold dear. If you have confidence, enthusiasm and a real community spirit, we’d love to hear from you.”

How to apply

Applications are open now. The council says the closing date has not yet been confirmed, so anyone interested is best keeping an eye on its website rather than working to a fixed deadline. Application forms can be collected from Newquay Library or downloaded from the council’s website, and completed forms can be returned to the library or emailed to [email protected].

The Killacourt audition

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a Town Crier Competition on the Killacourt in Newquay, though a date for this has not yet been set. Candidates will get the chance to show off their presentation skills, confidence and vocal ability in front of both judges and the watching public.

Full details, including the role description and application form, are on the council’s events page.

Simon’s bell has rung out over Newquay’s biggest occasions for years. Whoever takes over will need a voice loud enough to fill the Killacourt, and the nerve to do it in front of a crowd.
