Reach for the waterproofs before you head out today. Cornwall opens the week under a proper soaking, with heavy rain sweeping across Truro and the surrounding area and a near-certain chance of getting caught in it. The good news is that this is the wettest day in the week’s forecast by some distance, and everything after it looks a good deal kinder.

Today

Heavy rain dominates Tuesday, with the chance of precipitation sitting at 95% or higher for much of the day. The high reaches 18°C and the low sits around 13°C, though it will feel more like 15°C once the wind and the wet are factored in. Gusts touch 32mph, so an umbrella may struggle. A waterproof coat is the safer call.

Tonight

The rain eases as the evening goes on. Expect light showers to begin with, then skies turning partly cloudy overnight as the worst of the wet clears through. The overnight low holds at about 13°C, mild enough to stay a soft, muggy sort of night rather than a cold one.

Wednesday

A real change of mood. Wednesday brings sunny intervals and a fresher feel, the high still around 18°C but the overnight low dipping to 10°C. There is a 50% chance of a passing shower, so it is not wall-to-wall blue sky, and gusts settle back to 27mph. After Tuesday, it will feel like a different week.

Thursday

Cloudier again, but dry for the most part. Thursday sits under grey skies with a high of 19°C and a milder low of 15°C. The chance of rain drops to 30%, and winds stay moderate with gusts around 28mph. A good day for getting outdoor jobs done between the clouds.

Friday

Sunny intervals return to round off the working week. Friday reaches 20°C by day before a notably cooler night at 9°C, the chilliest of the run. Showers are a 50/50 call and the wind falls away to 22mph gusts, the calmest it has been all week.

The weekend

Both weekend days hold at 20°C, and this is where the settled spell really shows. Saturday looks the pick of the two, sunny intervals with just a 20% chance of rain and light 22mph gusts. Sunday turns overcast but stays mild, the high again at 20°C and the low a warm 16°C, with rain chances back up to 30%.

The outlook

Into next week the quiet theme carries on. Monday 14 September stays overcast and mild at 20°C, winds easing to 20mph gusts and only a 30% chance of a shower. It is a long way from the downpour that opens the week, and whether that milder, cloudier pattern settles in or breaks down again is the thing to keep half an eye on as the forecast rolls on.
