Land’s End Coastguard’s busy week: a search and a Nanjizal rescue

A search stood down within hours near Penzance, and a hiker helped off the cliffs at Nanjizal with a suspected broken wrist. It has been a mixed few days for Land’s End Coastguard Search and Rescue Team, whose volunteers were tasked twice inside a week.

A police-led search near Penzance, called off within hours

On Tuesday 1 September, at 8.25pm, the team was tasked to carry out a search alongside Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team in West Cornwall. The operation was suspended by Devon and Cornwall Police pending further enquiries.

Those enquiries later confirmed the person being searched for was safe and well, and the two search and rescue teams stood down.

A deformed wrist found at Nanjizal with the help of what3words

Five days later, on Sunday 6 September at 2.32pm, a very different callout took the team to Nanjizal, where a walker had suffered a suspected broken wrist. The casualty had shared their position using what3words, and the team says it found them quickly as a result.

Initial observations at the scene showed the wrist was deformed, so a trip to hospital was needed to determine the extent of the injury. Volunteers stabilised the injury after further assessment, helped the casualty back to a vehicle, and stayed with them while they waited for an ambulance.

The team has wished the casualty a speedy recovery. Its message after both callouts stays the same: if you see someone in danger on the coast, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
