Mike Galsworthy brings the EU membership case to Truro

Cornwall’s Europhiles are getting a night out with one of the movement’s most recognisable voices, and a proper chance to put questions to him rather than just read his tweets.

An evening talk in Truro

Cornwall for Europe is hosting Mike Galsworthy for an evening talk and Q&A titled “Targeting the manifestos: how we get parties committing to Europe”. It runs at Truro School Prep, Highertown, Truro (TR1 3QN), from 6pm on Friday 25 September.

Mike Galsworthy chairs European Movement UK, founded and remains sole director of Scientists for EU, and founded and co-directs the Bylines Network, a group of ten citizen-run local titles. Cornwall for Europe describes him as one of the foremost commentators on the UK’s relationship with the EU, and one of the leading figures in the country’s pro-EU movement. Mike will give the talk himself and take questions afterwards.

What “targeting the manifestos” actually means

The title is more specific than it sounds. Mike’s talk sets out how to use the run-up to the next General Election to pin down commitments from political parties for the next parliament, and specifically how to secure a public mandate at that vote for opening accession talks on full EU membership. It’s a live question in Cornish politics and beyond: how do you turn a campaign with genuine public support into an actual line in a manifesto that a party then has to answer for?

Cornwall for Europe frames the evening as an open discussion rather than a lecture, with plenty of time set aside afterwards for the audience to put their own questions to Mike.

Tea, coffee and a chance to talk after

Once the formal Q&A wraps up, the evening moves into socialising over tea and coffee, giving people the chance to carry on the conversation informally.
