Three Newquay lifeguards honoured for Fistral mass rescue

Seventeen people needed pulling from the water at Fistral Beach in a single afternoon last summer, and three of the lifeguards who did it have just picked up the RNLI’s highest form of in-house recognition for how they handled it.

What happened at Fistral

On 26 July 2025, RNLI lifeguards on duty at Fistral Beach in Newquay were confronted with what the charity has described as extremely hazardous conditions, and ended up carrying out a mass rescue involving 17 casualties. The team’s response, working together under pressure, resulted in lives being saved.

Chief executive commendations

Three of the lifeguards involved, Harry Pleasants, Sonny Timson and Gabe Llewellyn, have now each been awarded a chief executive commendation by the RNLI in recognition of their courage and teamwork that day. RNLI Lifeguards Newquay shared the news on Facebook, saying it was proud to see the trio honoured for their part in the rescue.

“Well done, Harry, Sonny and Gabe,” the station’s post read, “well deserved recognition for everyone involved.”
