Crantock’s surf lifesavers swap their clubhouse for a container

For now, the club that keeps watch over Crantock Beach is running out of a container. The old clubhouse is gone, the new one is still to be built, and the gap between the two comes with a price tag.

Work on the new clubhouse starts next week

Crantock Surf Life Saving Club has moved out of its old clubhouse and is operating from a container while building work gets under way. The work on its new clubhouse is due to start next week, and the club says it is all starting to feel very real.

There is good news on the money side too. Thanks to support from Making Space for Sand, funding has been secured towards the new building.

Why the new clubhouse is being built to cope

Making Space for Sand is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme. It is managed by the Environment Agency and delivered by the Cornwall Council project team.

The club says the funding is helping it create a clubhouse that is more resilient to the challenges facing the coastline as the climate changes. It also gives the club more flexibility to adapt in the future.

The £100,000 still to find

But the club is not quite there yet. It still needs to raise around £100,000 to complete the project, and says every fundraiser and every bit of support makes a difference.

The community has already been pitching in. The recent Bale Push helped move the total along, and the club’s 40th anniversary celebrations are next on the list.

The Next Wave at The Bowgie

That anniversary gets its own night. The Next Wave takes place at The Bowgie on Saturday 10 October, marking 40 years of Crantock Surf Life Saving Club and raising money for its future.

There will be live music and a silent disco, and the night also hosts the premiere of the club’s new film. Tickets are available through the link in the club’s social media bio.

What the film shows, nobody outside the club has seen yet.
