Falmouth fire boat called to latest in spate of Mawnan fires

Some fires can only be reached from the water.

Firefighters from Falmouth had to launch their fire boat on Monday morning (28 September) to tackle a fire on the edge of the woodland between Grebe and Mawnan.

Two on the boat, two on the rocks

Falmouth Community Fire Station said two crew stayed on board to control the boat and operate the pump. The other two went ashore with a hose line and put the fire out.

Photos shared by the station show the hose running from the boat, over the rocks and up onto the slope below the trees.

Not the first fire here

And this one wasn’t a one-off. The station says there has been a spate of fires in the same area over the past few weeks.

“We have had a spate of fires in this area over the past few weeks, which is a serious concern for the locality but also a significant drain on fire service resources,” the station said.

Falmouth Fire Station is holding an open day this Sunday (4 October), from 11am to 3pm, for anyone who wants to find out more about their fire service and what it does.

Visitors can meet the crews and other first responders, watch live demonstrations, explore the vehicles and kit, and have a go at a tug of war. There’s a charity raffle with prizes too.

A quieter first hour

The first hour, from 11am to 12pm, is an SEN hour. It will be quieter and less lively, so it’s the time to go if you’re worried about sensory overload.

Free parking is available at Falmouth School.
