Why Truro’s rangers changed the design of a Daubuz Moor boardwalk

One of the boardwalks at Daubuz Moor in Truro looks rather different this week. And the new look is about more than fresh timber.

Truro’s Countryside Rangers have spent the past week replacing the boardwalk, and they have used the job to rethink how it sits in the landscape.

Out with the old

The work started with taking the old structure out. Once it was gone, the team brought in new material to build its replacement.

A slightly different design

Rather than copy what was there before, the rangers went for a slightly different design. One of the main reasons was the trees.

The new layout has been built to protect the tree roots around the boardwalk, something that is easy to overlook when most people only think about what is underfoot.

A trip hazard covered

The redesign also deals with a trip hazard on the central Cornish hedge. The new boardwalk now covers it, so walkers crossing that stretch no longer have it to contend with.

The new boardwalk in place

Photos shared by the team show the build from start to finish, from the old boards being lifted to the finished walkway with its handrail and grip strips across the timber.

One of the pictures also shows a small onlooker, a hairy caterpillar making its way across the wood.
