Rescue boards under their arms, wetsuits on, and a week of training ahead. A group of women lifeguards from across the RNLI have spent a week together in Newquay, and it is the first time anything like it has been held.

RNLI Lifeguards Newquay said it was “proud to have the pleasure of hosting the first ever Women in Lifeguarding Training Week”.

Why the week was set up

According to the Newquay team, the week was “created to inspire and empower women in lifeguarding”.

It brought together women from across the RNLI to expand their knowledge, develop leadership skills and share experiences with like-minded people.

Boards, boats and time in the water

The team described a mix of “practical learning and development opportunities” alongside “conversations, challenges and plenty of time spent in the water”.

Photos shared by the Newquay lifeguards show the group working with rescue boards, an inshore rescue boat and rescue watercraft in the surf. Others show them using casualty care kit on the sand and digging together on the beach.

There are also pictures of a visit to an HM Coastguard helicopter and an evening talk indoors.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to learn from one another and build connections that will continue beyond the week,” the team said.

Where the group goes next

The Newquay lifeguards have not said what comes next for the women who took part, but they have made clear they expect more from them.

“We’re proud to support the development of women within lifeguarding and excited to see where this group goes next,” the team said.

“A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the week possible and to all those who took part!”
