Lilly Tucker’s corner sends St Agnes AFC Ladies into FA Cup history

One corner kick was all it took. No touch from a team-mate, no scramble on the line, just a ball swung in from the flag that ended up in the net and put a Cornish village club somewhere it has never been before.

St Agnes AFC Ladies are through to the First Round Proper of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

How St Agnes AFC Ladies won it

St Agnes AFC beat AFC Varsity Southampton 1-0 in what the club described as an end-to-end tie, played in front of a crowd of more than 220.

The only goal came from Lilly Tucker, who scored directly from a corner. The club called it “a brilliant goal”.

And it was enough. St Agnes held on to book their place in the next stage of the competition.

The next generation on the touchline

The day had a few extra faces on the pitch. Mascots from the St Agnes Girls Dynamos walked out with the teams, and ball girl Lillian was on duty too.

The club said it made the occasion “even more special”, with the next generation watching on from the sidelines.

Together since the under 8s

The side is now in its 24th season, and many of the current players have been with the club since they were under 8s. Girls who started out in St Agnes as small children have now reached the First Round Proper of the Women’s FA Cup as team-mates.

The club described it as “a brilliant achievement for the players, coaches, volunteers and everyone connected with the club”.

Its message to the squad was a short one: “Congratulations, St Agnes AFC Ladies!”
