Nansledan road closures: the Newquay dates you need
If your daily drive takes you through the big roundabout at Nansledan, pencil in the end of next week. From Monday 26 October, the first of a string of road closures arrives on the edge of Newquay, and the last of the work won’t wrap up until April.
Highway improvement works are planned at key locations in Nansledan from October 2026 to April 2027. The scheme is being delivered by Cornwall Council and Cormac, and has been shared locally by Newquay Town Council.

What is being built
The aim is to improve pedestrian facilities and make crossing points safer and easier to use. According to the council’s information leaflet, the scheme was developed in response to feedback and representations from the local community, particularly around pedestrian crossings and accessibility.
The work includes:
- A new signalised pedestrian crossing
- A new zebra crossing
- Widened pedestrian refuge islands
- New and improved crossing points
Once finished, the improvements are intended to give people travelling on foot safer and more convenient routes, and create a clearer road layout for everyone using the roads.
The project has been coordinated with other major schemes in the area, including the Mid Cornwall Metro project and utility works, to get the improvements done as efficiently as possible.
The phases and dates
Construction runs in two main blocks: 26 October to 13 November 2026, then 18 January to 9 April 2027. Within that, the work is split into six phases.
Phase 1: Quintrell Road (A3058)
A 24-hour road closure from 26 October to 13 November 2026.

During Phases 1 and 2, the existing one-way system on Rialton Road will be temporarily suspended. Access through the works area will be restricted to buses only, with three-way traffic lights managing vehicle movements.
Phase 3: William Hosking Road (A3058)
A 24-hour road closure from 1 February to 15 February 2027.
Phase 4: Stret Euther Penndragon
A 24-hour road closure from 15 February to 5 March 2027.

Phase 5: Stret Euther Penndragon
Signing, lighting and guarding in place from 8 March to 19 March 2027.
Phase 6: Quintrell Road
Signing, lighting and guarding in place from 22 March to 9 April 2027.
Final surfacing will take place between 22 March and 7 April 2027. That stage will need road closures and four-way temporary traffic signals at various locations.
Getting around while it happens
Signed diversions will be in place where needed, and pedestrian access will be kept open throughout. Access for residents and businesses inside the working area will continue wherever it is safe and practical, and those who may be affected will be contacted directly. Barriers and safety measures will guide pedestrians around the site.
Drivers are asked to allow extra time for journeys and follow signed diversions. The surfacing work in particular is expected to bring more noise, temporary delays and changes to normal travel routes.

Where to find updates
Live information on roadworks, closures and diversions is on one.network. Cormac’s Cornwall programming pages list planned work by Community Area Partnership, under “More detail for local areas” and then “Highways Work Programme”. If you’re not sure which partnership covers you, Cornwall Council has a Community Area Partnerships page.
Questions about the scheme can go to [email protected]. Problems on a road, highway or footway can be reported at cornwall.gov.uk/reportroad, and anything that threatens public safety should be phoned through on 0300 1234 222, a 24-hour line, with details of the location.
The council says it appreciates roadworks can be inconvenient and has thanked residents and businesses for their patience. Between the two blocks of work, from mid-November to mid-January, no phases are scheduled at all.
