Falmouth Watercolour Classes Begin 1st June, Free Tasters in May

Most people who pick up a watercolour brush give up within weeks, convinced the medium is simply too hard. A Falmouth-based teacher reckons that’s nonsense, and she’s offering free taster sessions this month to prove it.

Pendennis Community Centre in Falmouth is hosting a new run of watercolour classes this summer, taught by Fiona Loveday Pruden, who has been teaching the medium for more than two decades.

Free taster sessions before the full term begins

Three free taster sessions are scheduled before the main term kicks off. Anyone curious can drop in on Monday 11th May or Wednesday 13th May, both running from 1.00pm to 3.30pm, or Saturday 30th May from 10.00am to 12.30pm.

The full term of weekly classes starts on Monday 1st June and runs through term-time.

Two groups, two different paces

The “Starting Out” beginners classes follow a weekly schedule built around landscapes, seascapes, still life, fruit, flowers, nature, buildings, bodies and animals. Each session comes with a prep sheet covering the subject, composition, drawing skills, colours, brushes and any additives needed for that week’s painting. Fiona says these sheets are designed to build into a reference library students can use throughout their painting careers.

Once students find their feet, there’s a “Stepping Out” group that heads to different locations across the area to walk and paint outdoors.

Materials sold at internet prices

One of the things Fiona is keen to flag is the cost of getting started. Over the years she’s worked with paint maker Winsor & Newton, paper manufacturer St Cuthberts Mill, and one of the few hand-made brush makers left in the country. She supplies a materials list and sells everything students need at internet prices, so beginners aren’t shelling out for things they don’t yet understand.
