Historic 80th Anniversary of D-Day Commemorated in Bodmin
Today, Bodmin Keep: Cornwall’s Army Museum marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a poignant commemoration service. The event, which began at 10:30am, was led by Padre Rev Canon John Halkes and included a two-minute silence to honour the sacrifices made during Operation Overlord.
A Day of Remembrance
The commemoration service was attended by members of the DCLI, SCLI, LI, and Rifles Association. Participants gathered to remember the extensive preparations for D-Day that took place in Bodmin. A Service of Remembrance was held, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony, paying tribute to those who contributed to the success of the historic operation.
Parade and Civic Participation
Earlier in the day, Bodmin town witnessed a ceremonial parade. The Mayor and council members observed as members of the armed services paraded the colours outside the Town Hall, adding a significant civic dimension to the day’s events.
ITV Westcountry Highlights Local Tribute
Last night, ITV Westcountry’s evening news featured a special report on D-Day in Cornwall. The segment included an interview with Helen Bishop-Stephens, Director of Bodmin Keep, offering insights into the local significance of D-Day. This report is available for viewing on ITV’s catch-up service.
New Exhibition Opens
Coinciding with the anniversary, Bodmin Keep launched a new exhibition titled “Carclew: A House at War.” The exhibition, which is free with admission, opened today and explores the historical impact of the war on the Carclew estate.
Bodmin Keep’s dedication to preserving and honouring the memory of D-Day ensures that the bravery and sacrifices of those involved are remembered for generations to come.
