Cornwall’s most unsettling fictional address is back. The latest novel in the Porthleven Horrors series has arrived, and if the title is anything to go by, things beneath the village are getting louder.

Jemima and the Ginormous Knockers continues the story of Jemima Stone, the reluctant proprietor of a Cornish garlic bread shop who has already contended with vampires, werewolves, and some deeply questionable structural issues underneath Porthleven. This time, something older is making itself known from below — and it is knocking.

The novel is the latest in a loosely connected series by author B. Rams-Doughka, who has built a cult following with titles including The Little Cornish Garlic Bread Shop by the Sea and An Armenian Werewolf in Bodmin. The books blend grounded domestic life with escalating supernatural threat, set against the atmospheric backdrop of Cornwall’s south coast.

Rams-Doughka is known for an unusual approach to his subject matter, combining folkloric research, speculative history, and what his publishers describe as “questionable fieldwork methods.”

The Cast Returns

Jemima is once again joined by her unconventional circle: Gideon, a former soldier with extensive experience in the unnatural; Lexie, whose scepticism is matched only by her bluntness; Taff, whose scientific background proves increasingly inadequate to the task; and Crumpet, her perceptive tabby cat.

Together, they are drawn back into the darkness Jemima once fought to escape, as a new and deeply unsettling presence emerges from beneath the village.

What Readers Are Saying

Early readers have described the novel as “uneasily funny,” “deeply Cornish in atmosphere,” and “making garlic bread feel emotionally significant, which is unexpected but accurate.”

A spokesperson for the fictional Rams-Doughka Trust offered their own characteristically oblique assessment: “We are not saying these events are true. We are also not saying they are not. We are simply saying Cornwall should perhaps keep an eye on its walls.”
