Cornwall for Europe Held “Rejoin Ramble” Walk from Marazion to Mousehole

A walk that should have taken two hours stretched past four, and the reason had nothing to do with the weather or anyone’s pace.

On Sunday 10th May, around thirty people gathered at Marazion for what was billed as a training and publicity walk for the upcoming “Rejoin Ramble”. Some had travelled from Bristol and Cardiff to join the group, organised by Peter and Clare from National Rejoin March, working with Cornwall for Europe.

The route took walkers from Marazion through Penzance and on to Mousehole. Local MP Andrew George joined the group for part of the way, speaking to those taking part and sharing his own views on the UK’s relationship with the EU.

A two hour walk that took over four

The organisers had two aims for the day. The first was publicity for the “Rejoin Ramble” itself. The second was to raise awareness of National Rejoin March IV, which is taking place in London on 20th June. Cornwall for Europe will be organising a coach to London for the march, as they have done for previous events.

What was meant to be a roughly two hour walk ended up lasting more than four. According to the group, that was down to the number of supporters who stopped them along the way wanting to talk.

The bigger picture

Cornwall for Europe say their regular street stalls show a majority in Cornwall, as in the rest of the UK, in favour of returning to EU membership. The group has been campaigning since 2018, originally to reverse the decision to leave, and since 2021 for a full return.

They point to the government itself now openly saying the UK needs to move closer to Europe again, ten years on from the referendum. They also reference current world events and what they describe as the deterioration of the UK’s relationship with the US.

What happens next

The “Rejoin Ramble” proper will run from London to Brussels between 23rd May and 5th June. Peter, Clare and Ceira will deliver a booklet of pro-EU messages from UK citizens to the European Parliament, with the aim of drawing attention to UK opinion on rejoining.
