Cornwall Rejoin EU Walk Heads Along Coast From Marazion to Mousehole
Ten years on from the Brexit vote, campaigners are taking to the Cornish coast path to make their case for a return to the European Union, and they want as many people as possible to walk alongside them.
Cornwall for Europe, which has been campaigning on the issue since 2018, is hosting a rally and training walk on Sunday 10th May, starting at 11.00 am in Marazion. The route follows the coast path through Penzance to Mousehole, and walkers are welcome to join or drop out at any point along the way.
Why Now
The group says momentum is shifting. Even the government is openly talking about getting closer to Europe again, and every street stall poll the campaigners carry out shows a strong majority in favour of rejoining. Current world events, along with what the group describes as the deterioration of the UK’s relationship with the US, have added weight to their argument.
Who’s Walking
Peter and Clare from National Rejoin March will be leading the rally alongside Cornwall for Europe. Organisers expect to be joined by local MP Andrew George, several Penzance Town Councillors, and a good number of Cornwall for Europe members.
The Bigger Picture
The 10th May walk doubles as training and publicity for the “Rejoin Ramble”, a longer walk from London to Brussels taking place between 23rd May and 5th June. The Brussels delivery will include a booklet of pro-EU messages from UK citizens, handed to the European Parliament to highlight that most people in the UK now favour a return to the EU.
After that comes National Rejoin March IV in London on 20th June. Cornwall for Europe will be organising a coach to take supporters up from Cornwall, as it has done for previous marches.
Joining In
The Marazion to Mousehole walk is free, and tickets are available through Eventbrite. Organisers say the issue is close to many hearts in Cornwall, based on what they hear from residents on the streets.
