What the trial set out to test

Bude RNLI trialled an Atlantic 85 class lifeboat at Summerleaze Beach earlier this year. The aim was to find out whether it could operate safely from the station and sit alongside the search and rescue capability already in place.

Why the Atlantic 85 is staying away

The Atlantic 85 has proven capabilities at many other locations around the coast. But the trial confirmed it is not the right fit for Bude.

The station described the findings as incredibly valuable, and says they will help inform its future planning.

Barbara Ann Bennett remains the station’s main lifeboat

D class lifeboat D826 Barbara Ann Bennett remains the station’s primary asset. The station says she continues to be a highly effective rescue vessel, well suited to the conditions they regularly meet along this stretch of coastline.

What happens next

Bude RNLI says it is continuing to explore other ways of developing and enhancing its lifesaving service, for both the crew and the community.

The station thanked everyone who showed an interest in the trial, “and for your continued support of Bude RNLI Lifeboats”.
