Bude’s Poppy Appeal begins as Shalder Hill gets a fresh look
Wind, rain and a few years on an exposed hilltop have taken their toll on the Remembrance display at Shalder Hill. So this year, Budehaven Community School is helping to put it right.
Preparations for the 2026 Poppy Appeal are well underway in Bude, with local veterans, the school and community organisations all playing a part.

The man behind this year’s appeal
The appeal is being organised locally by Dave Worth.
It’s a job that takes considerable time, effort and coordination. Bude-Stratton Town Council has thanked Dave for his continued dedication and commitment to supporting the tradition.
A new look for Shalder Hill
For several years, Shalder Hill has been decorated through the Remembrance period, drawing attention to Bude War Memorial and marking the significance of the occasion.
Over time, though, the decorations have suffered from weather damage and general wear.
Budehaven Community School is now helping to refresh the display. The materials have been sponsored by the local Royal British Legion (RBL), Royal Naval Association (RNA) and Royal Marines Association (RMA).
The refreshed decorations are expected to be in place at the beginning of November, ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
Thanks from the town
The council sees the appeal as a chance for residents and visitors to show their support for the Armed Forces community and the work of the Royal British Legion.
Its thanks go to everyone involved in this year’s preparations, including the RBL, RNA, RMA, the school and the many volunteers who give up their time. You can read the council’s full announcement on its website.

Where to find the collectors
Dave and fellow local veterans will be collecting for the Poppy Appeal at Morrisons and at the top of Belle Vue throughout the Remembrance period.
