Marhamchurch Pupils Take Part in Beach Learning Sessions at Crooklets

Reception pupils from Marhamchurch C of E Academy have been swapping the classroom for the coast this term, taking part in hands-on beach sessions designed to help them understand and protect their local environment.

The school, which is part of the Learning Academy Partnership, has been working with the 2 Minute Foundation, a national charity that promotes simple actions to tackle litter and pollution. Sessions have been held at Crooklets in Bude, giving children the chance to explore their seaside surroundings while learning how to care for wildlife.

Exploring Rock Pools and Marine Life

During the visits, pupils investigated rock pools, searched for wildlife along the strandline and learned about dunes, tides and marine mammals. Games, stories and songs were used to bring the lessons to life.

Morvil, the 2 Minute whale, also made regular appearances, reinforcing the charity’s message that “it only takes 2 minutes to make a difference”.

The children then put their learning into practice by picking up litter to help reduce plastic pollution, taking care around sea creatures and respecting their habitats.

Linking Learning to Climate Action

The beach sessions form part of the school’s wider approach to encouraging pupils to explore and take responsibility for the world around them. They complement other environmental work at the school, including Cornwall Climate Care workshops where pupils have been making personal pledges to help tackle climate change.

“It has been wonderful to see our youngest pupils exploring the beach with such curiosity and care. They have shown a real understanding of how their actions can make a difference, and it’s fantastic to see them putting what they’ve learned into action.”
