Pupils at Marhamchurch C of E Academy were given the chance to get hands-on with music during a day of workshops led by local community organisation RootNotes.

The sessions were delivered by musician Becki Driscoll, who works with groups across the region to bring music into communities. Throughout the day, children took part in a range of activities, including composing their own pieces before coming together to perform a collective piece in the afternoon.

A Day Filled With Music

Staff at the school said the workshops proved popular, with many pupils eager to find out when they could take part again.

Music already plays a key role at Marhamchurch School, where pupils are encouraged to explore creativity through listening, performing and composing. As part of this, children can learn instruments such as guitar, brass and woodwind.

Some pupils also take part in local youth ensembles, including the Triggshire and Triggety orchestras, helping them build confidence and express themselves through music.

‘The Whole School Was Alive With Music’

Deirdre Petersen, headteacher at Marhamchurch C of E Academy, said:
“The children loved the chance to compose, perform and try something new together, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm. We are so grateful to Becki for coming in and sharing her passion and expertise. The whole school was alive with music.”

Becki Driscoll added:
“It’s been great coming in to work with the pupils at Marhamchurch. I taught a tune called ‘Gull on the Shore’ and the children played a variety of different instruments to make a band together. It’s lovely to work in a school that clearly values music!”

Tracey Cleverly, CEO of Learning Academy Partnership, said:
“Opportunities to perform, compose and work creatively together help children build confidence and discover new interests, so it’s great to see the pupils at Marhamchurch enjoying music in this way.”
