Cornwall Poised to Drive UK Economic Growth: British Chambers of Commerce Chief Visits County
Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, recently visited Cornwall to explore the region’s economic strengths and opportunities. Hosted by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, the two-day visit highlighted Cornwall’s potential as a leader in the regenerative economy, showcasing its innovative industries and skilled workforce.
Haviland’s visit coincided with the Autumn Budget and aligned with the Government’s Invest 2035 strategy, emphasising Cornwall’s ability to contribute to the UK’s sustainable growth.
Cornwall’s Industries in the Spotlight
The visit began with a tour of Cornish Lithium, followed by a Regenerative Roundtable that brought together key organisations, including Celtic Sea Power, Spaceport Cornwall, and the University of Exeter. The discussions underscored Cornwall’s readiness to lead in emerging sectors but highlighted the need for government support to realise this potential.
John Brown, CEO of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, said: “Cornwall stands at the forefront of the regenerative future, with industries ready to rise to the challenge. With the right government support, we can make this a reality.”
At Falmouth University, Haviland explored Cornwall’s thriving creative industries, which are key drivers of local talent development and economic growth. The university’s initiatives align closely with Invest 2035, reinforcing the region’s importance in building a creative, innovative future.
Apprentices and Future Talent
On the second day, the focus shifted to Cornwall’s burgeoning talent pool. At Pendennis Shipyard, apprentices from Cornwall College showcased their skills in high-level projects, while a visit to Truro and Penwith College’s STEM and Health Skills Centre in Bodmin highlighted training programmes supporting careers in healthcare and aeronautical technology.
These visits emphasised Cornwall’s commitment to retaining skilled talent and creating local employment opportunities in high-demand sectors.
Celebrating Cornwall’s Future Leaders
The visit culminated at Spaceport Cornwall, where Haviland met the winners of the Cornwall Chamber’s 30 Under 30 Awards. Addressing the group, she emphasised the importance of resilience and ambition, particularly for young women in business and politics.
Reflecting on Cornwall’s achievements, Shevaun Haviland said: “Cornwall exemplifies the innovative spirit and commitment needed to drive the UK’s economic future. I am truly inspired by the people I’ve met – from skilled apprentices to visionary entrepreneurs – all of whom are contributing to Cornwall’s exciting growth story. For Cornwall to realise its full potential, however, it’s critical that Government support is strong, enabling the infrastructure, investment, and training needed to sustain this momentum and ensure a prosperous future for Cornwall’s communities and businesses.”
A Call for Investment
John Brown reiterated the importance of recognising Cornwall’s role as a driver of economic opportunity, saying: “Shevaun Haviland’s visit has reinforced Cornwall’s position as a strategic leader in the UK’s regenerative economy. Our industries and educational institutions are aligned with the Government’s future vision, but to realise this potential, we need investment not out of altruism, but out of recognising Cornwall’s role as a key driver of economic opportunity. We’re proud of the talent, innovation, and ambition here, and we’re ready to make Cornwall a model for sustainable, future-facing growth.”
Cornwall’s businesses, educational institutions, and rising talent continue to position the region as a vital contributor to the UK’s economic future. With robust support and investment, Cornwall stands ready to lead in innovation, sustainability, and growth.
