Longstanding publicans step down after 15 years

A rare opportunity has come up to take the reins of one of Cornwall’s most cherished countryside pubs, as St Austell Brewery looks for a new publican for the iconic Polgooth Inn.

Situated in the heart of the Pentewan Valley, just outside St Austell, the 16th-century pub has built a loyal following with locals and visitors alike. Now, after 15 years at the helm, Tanya and Alex Williams are preparing to hand over the keys.

A hidden gem near the coast

Surrounded by lush countryside and popular walking trails, the Polgooth Inn sits close to Pentewan and Porthpean beaches. It has become a go-to spot for hearty food, open fires, live music, and summer evenings in the large beer garden, which includes a stream and seven acres of land to explore.

There are also three glamping pods on-site, adding to the pub’s appeal for holidaymakers looking for a unique Cornish stay.

A cornerstone of the community

Tanya, who took on the pub with her husband Alex in 2010, said:

“We believed from the start that the Polgooth Inn could sit at the heart of the community – and now the pub definitely does. From village celebrations to local events, we’ve loved being part of this community and are so proud of what’s been built. Running the pub has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve worked closely with St Austell Brewery, who have supported us at every step, and we’re excited to see new publicans bring fresh ideas and passion to this wonderful place.”

Packed with character and history

With three separate dining areas and room for 80 covers, the pub’s interiors are full of original features, low beams, and cosy corners. Outside, there’s a spacious beer garden, cycle and horse parking, and a covered seating area.

A well-equipped commercial kitchen, complete with walk-in chillers and freezers, is included, along with a three-bedroom flat for the new business partner to live in.

Looking for the right person

Andy Spry, Business Development Manager at St Austell Brewery, said:

“The Polgooth Inn is one of the jewels in our tenanted estate – full of warmth, history, and opportunity. Tanya and Alex have done an incredible job over the last 15 years. We’re now looking for an ambitious and experienced business partner who can take on this thriving business, maintain its exceptional standards, and bring new ideas to help it flourish.”
