Harbour Housing made a colourful impression during National Apprenticeship Week as its Conversation Starter Team attended the Cornwall College “1000 Futures” Careers Fair at John Keay House in St Austell.

Arriving in bright orange inflatable “conversation starter” suits, the team set out to do exactly what the name suggests. Designed to spark engagement and encourage meaningful discussions about careers in supported housing, the outfits ensured students and families stopped to find out more.

The team was led by People and Communications Manager Rachael Battleday, who for the evening was also known as “Bridget Jones Battleday”.

Expanding Apprenticeship Opportunities

Behind the humour was a clear message.

Harbour Housing is expanding its apprenticeship programme in partnership with Cornwall College and is currently recruiting for:

• Apprentice PR & Marketing
• Apprentice Data Analyst
• Apprentice Business Administrator
• Apprentice HR & Training Administrator

As a Cornwall based charity supporting vulnerable adults across the county, Harbour says apprenticeships offer more than entry level jobs. The organisation describes them as structured career pathways into housing, safeguarding, governance, data and communications.

Rachael Battleday said:

“We show up differently because we want young people to see that this sector is innovative and forward thinking. If a bright orange suit starts the conversation, that’s a success. What matters is that we’re offering real opportunities to build careers that genuinely change lives.”

Engaging Students and Families

Throughout the evening, the team spoke directly with students, answered questions about progression routes and highlighted the impact apprentices can make within a growing, mission driven charity.
