Why Truro’s Boscawen Street works compound can’t get any smaller

The barriers, the green-fenced compound and the red Road Closed signs on Boscawen Street are going to be part of the view in Truro for a while yet. And the city’s business group has already asked for the compound to shrink. The answer was no.

What is being repaired

Cormac is carrying out further repairs to the granite setts on Boscawen Street and the granite paving on Lower Lemon Street. This round focuses on areas that were not repaired previously.

On Boscawen Street, granite setts will be lifted, cleaned and relaid in six locations. On Lower Lemon Street, the paving outside Mannings Hotel, outside Michael Spiers and on the opposite side of the street will be repaired, with foundations rebuilt where needed to give a safer, longer-lasting surface.

Why the compound is staying the size it is

Truro BID says it contacted Cormac to ask for the compound on Boscawen Street to be reduced in size. Cormac told the BID it is unable to do that, because the machinery being used on Lower Lemon Street needs to be stored in the compound at night.

How long the closures will last

The work on Boscawen Street is due to run until Friday 6 November. According to information from Cormac and Cornwall Council, it will be completed before the Remembrance Sunday parade and the Christmas events.

Road closures and 24/7 traffic management will stay in place until the work is finished. That is partly for safety and partly to give the relaid stone time to cure. Cormac will signpost an alternative route, and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
