Try to pop into a bank in Callington and you will come up short. The town has no branch left, and the everyday business of drawing out cash, paying in a cheque or sorting a bill face to face has become a trip out of town. Now the people who run the town want to know whether a banking hub could bring those counters back, and they are asking you to tell them.

A town left without a counter

Callington Town Council has launched a short survey after warning that the town currently has no banking branches at all, and that access to cash and everyday banking is becoming harder for the people and businesses who live and trade there. The feedback, it says, will help support the case for a potential banking hub.

Banking hubs have become one of the main answers to bank branches closing across the country. They give a town a shared counter, run for the major banks together, rather than one company keeping a branch open on its own.

What a banking hub could offer

The council has set out what a hub could provide. The list covers cash withdrawals, business banking services, cheque deposits and bill payments, along with face-to-face support from the major banks and help for anyone finding their way around digital banking. In short, most of the counter services a high street branch used to handle, gathered under one roof.

Have your say

The survey takes around five minutes, and the council says every response will help shape plans for banking services in Callington. You can complete the survey online, or pick up a paper copy from Callington Town Hall on New Road, PL17 7BE, fill it in and return it.

The council has framed the whole thing around one line: “Together, we can help bring essential banking services back to Callington.”
