Camborne Community Centre Celebrates Grant Milestone

Published On: 14 February 2024Last Updated: 14 February 2024By

Camborne Community Centre has been announced as the 100th recipient of the Town Deal grant, marking a significant milestone in the effort to rejuvenate Camborne’s town centre. This achievement is part of the broader Project A-Void initiative led by BID Camborne, which has now directed £5,000 towards the restoration of two previously neglected rooms within the centre.

The funding facilitated the demolition of a partition wall between the rooms and the removal of a substantial amount of rubbish, transforming the space into a more functional and appealing area. Jean Charman, Chair of the Trustees, shared the historical significance of the community centre, highlighting its past as a residence for the steward of the Basset family of Tehidy and later as the Tehidy estate office.

The refurbishment has created a large, rentable room that promises privacy for clients, thereby generating additional revenue for the self-funded facility. This financial boost comes at a crucial time for the centre, which faces growing fuel bills and repair costs. Charman emphasised the trustees’ commitment to keeping the centre accessible to Camborne residents, acknowledging the grant’s role in fulfilling this duty.

Project A-Void is among eleven Camborne Town Deal projects, with a deadline for final phase two applications set for 19 February. The initiative has already benefited over 100 businesses through phase 2 of Town Deal funding, according to Anna Pascoe, BID Camborne Manager. Pascoe praised the community centre’s rich history and its vital role in the community, expressing delight at its bright future made possible by the grant.

Camborne’s receipt of £23.7m in Town Deal funding from the Government, the highest in Cornwall, underscores the town’s commitment to revitalisation and growth. The first phase of Project A-Void began in October 2020, distributing £262,000 among more than 60 businesses, with the second phase initiated early last year to further support the filling of empty properties, aid new and existing businesses, and improve town signage.
