Camborne Police Want to Walk and Talk With Women About Safety

Walking home from town, cutting through that alleyway, passing the boarded up shop on the corner. There are places in every neighbourhood that make women feel uneasy, and Camborne, Pool and Redruth Police want to hear about them.

The neighbourhood team has launched a scheme called Walk and Talk, part of a wider effort to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls in the area.

How it works

The scheme pairs female members of the public with a female police officer or PCSO for a walk around areas that feel unsafe. The walks last around 30 minutes and take place at a time that suits whoever has reached out.

Participants can point out anything that worries them. That could be particular premises, alleyways, streets, abandoned buildings, vandalism, or situations where someone has been followed or verbally abused.

To take part you must be over 18, or under 18 accompanied by an adult.

Who it is for

Police say the scheme is open to anyone with a stake in female safety locally. That includes individuals who have felt unsafe in the past, parents with daughters worried about specific areas or premises, dog walkers, running groups, and anyone with ideas about how to improve safety in the community.

What happens with the information

Officers say they are working with partners to address the issues raised in walks so far. They also acknowledged a fair criticism, that they don’t always talk enough about the work already done behind the scenes.

Some of that work cannot be shared publicly, particularly where matters are sensitive or pending a decision. But the team pointed to recent television coverage of closure orders in Troon as one example of action that has come from this kind of community feedback.

Walk and Talk is running in several police forces across the country.
