The timing could hardly have been better. As the last of the works wrapped up at Camborne Recreation Ground, the rugby club that plays there was busy collecting a league title.

Major upgrades to the Recreation Ground, home of Camborne Rugby Football Club, are now finished. The work was paid for by £1m of Camborne Town Deal funding.

What the money paid for

The improvements cover most corners of the site. The grandstand roof has been replaced and the changing rooms refurbished. New facilities have been created for physiotherapists and support staff, and a new toilet block has been built.

There is also new LED floodlighting, a resurfaced car park and an upgraded perimeter exercise track. On the energy side, the ground now has a sustainable system built around 85 solar panels with battery storage attached.

Part of a bigger plan for the town

Renovating the Recreation Ground was one of ten Camborne projects awarded a combined £23.7m by Government in 2021 under the Town Deal. The money is administered by Cornwall Council, and the projects share a single aim: to regenerate the heart of Camborne and turn it into a visually appealing, accessible place to live, work, shop and visit.

The work has landed alongside a notable moment on the pitch. Camborne RFC have won the National Two West title and been promoted to the National One league.

A club approaching 150 years

Martin Symons, Chair of Camborne RFC, said: “Camborne RFC and the town now have facilities to be proud of as the Club approaches its 150th year with continued aspirations to grow sporting participation and enhance community wellbeing.

“We’re indebted to everyone involved in making this happen.”

Val Dalley, Chair of the Camborne Town Deal board, said: “It was a real joy to go to the Recreation Ground and see all the changes, especially at a time when the club is celebrating such a momentous milestone in its long and successful history.

“Town Deal funding is making a big impact in Camborne, and I look forward to congratulating more project leaders like Martin and his team in the months to come.”

More details on the wider programme are on the Camborne Town Deal website.
