Parades, Remembrance services, visits from senior public figures. For the next twelve months, when the King’s representative in Cornwall turns out for the big occasions, a sixth former from Camborne will be part of the picture.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Lily Woollard has been appointed His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for Cornwall, an honour that recognises her leadership and her commitment to serving her community.

Invested at the Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards

Lily is a Year 13 student at Camborne Science and International Academy and a member of 1900 (West Cornwall) Squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

She was formally invested at the annual Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards Ceremony at New County Hall in Truro last Thursday (15 October), with the academy’s principal, Emma Haase, in the audience.

The appointment was made by Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho, Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall and the King’s representative in the county. Lily will hold the role for the next year.

What a Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet does

Over the coming year Lily will represent the cadet movement at official engagements and support the Lord-Lieutenant at events across Cornwall.

Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets help with a range of official duties. These include civic ceremonies, parades, Remembrance events and visits by senior public figures. The role gives young people the chance to represent their organisations and communities at some of the county’s biggest occasions.

Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho said being selected as a Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet is a tremendous achievement.

“The appointment recognises the highest standards of commitment, leadership and citizenship within the cadet forces,” he said. “Lily should be extremely proud of all she has accomplished, and I very much look forward to seeing her represent both her squadron and Cornwall at a range of civic and ceremonial engagements over the coming year.”

A year of leading from the front

The appointment follows a year of commitment to the RAF Air Cadets. In that time Lily has shown strong leadership and instructional skills, supporting and mentoring junior cadets and earning the respect of both her peers and the adult volunteers.

She has represented her squadron at events and parades, and taken part in the National Air and Space Camp, the Royal International Air Tattoo and a number of summer camps.

“I’m incredibly proud to have been appointed as Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for Cornwall,” Lily said. “Being able to represent the RAF Air Cadets and my county over the next year is a huge honour, and I’m really looking forward to the opportunities and experiences ahead.

“The cadets have given me so many chances to develop my confidence and leadership skills, and I hope to use this role to encourage other young people to get involved.”

A proud day for her school

Emma Haase said the academy was incredibly proud of Lily and what she had achieved.

“Her dedication, leadership and commitment to supporting others make her an excellent role model, and this appointment is a wonderful recognition of everything she has contributed to the RAF Air Cadets,” she said.

“It is particularly exciting that she will have the opportunity to represent Cornwall’s cadet movement over the coming year, taking part in important events and meeting people from across public life. We look forward to following her journey and seeing all that she achieves in this prestigious role.”
