50mph E-Bikes Seized After Dramatic Camborne Chase

Two illegally modified e-bikes capable of reaching speeds of up to 50mph have been seized by police following a foot chase in Camborne.

Officers were carrying out a standard afternoon foot patrol when they spotted the bikes being ridden at substantial speed through Portreath on Sunday 5th April. The situation quickly escalated into a pursuit on foot.

Bikes More Than Three Times Legal Limit

The e-bikes seized were found to be significantly more powerful than what is legally allowed.

PC James Tompson said: “Legal e-bikes only have electrical assistance up to speeds of 15.5mph. However, the bikes we seized were more than three times as fast and powered by throttle alone, which makes them very dangerous bits of kit when being ridden on cycle paths.

“There is no joy for us when seizing e-bikes, but when they have potential to cause significant, and in some cases lifechanging injuries, it’s important that we take action.

“Our job is to keep everyone safe, that includes other road users, pedestrians and the riders themselves.

“We will continue to be out on the streets to do just that.”

Investigation Ongoing

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police have highlighted that most people use e-bikes safely, with enforcement action focused on those who modify them illegally or use them carelessly.

Reminder on E-Bike Laws

Officers have also reminded the public of the rules surrounding e-bike use.

E-bikes cannot be ridden on pavements and must only be used on cycle paths or in areas where pedal bikes are permitted.
