New speed sign arrives on Camborne’s Eastern Lane after complaints

Drivers heading along Eastern Lane in Camborne are now met with a screen telling them exactly how fast they are going. It went up after residents told the town council the road had become a particular spot for speeding cars.

Residents flagged the road as a hotspot

Local people had raised concerns that Eastern Lane was a particular hotspot for speeding, and in response Camborne Town Council and Cornwall Council worked together to deliver a new Vehicle Activated Speed (VAS) sign for the road. Cllr White and Cllr Ball were both involved in progressing the project, and in the video above, Cllr Ball can be heard speaking about why the initiative matters.

How the sign works

The VAS sign shows drivers their own speed as they pass, giving them an immediate reminder to slow down if they need to. It also quietly collects data on the speeds vehicles are actually travelling at along the road. If that data points to a genuine problem, it can be shared with Devon and Cornwall Police to support a decision on whether enforcement is needed.

More signs could follow elsewhere in Camborne

Camborne Town Council says it will keep working with Cornwall Council to identify other locations around the town where a VAS sign could help address speeding concerns and improve community safety. Eastern Lane, then, may not be the only road to get one.
