Trelowarren Street closes for Camborne’s youngest cyclists

For four hours on Sunday 13 September, one of Camborne‘s busiest shopping streets belongs entirely to bikes, trikes and stabilisers. Trelowarren Street shuts to traffic from 8.30am to 12.30pm for the return of Tykes on Trikes, the town’s free children’s cycling event, now heading into its fifth year.

Three age groups, three kinds of race

Tykes on Trikes splits the action into three categories so every child gets a race that suits them. Tots on Trikes is for the under-fives, Tykes on Trikes itself covers 6 to 10-year-olds, and Twinkling Stars on Trikes is a quieter, gentler race for children who would rather take things at their own pace.

Registration is free. Parents need to email the team to be sent a short form to complete, and every child taking part must bring their own bike.

A fire engine, face paint and a goodie bag

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is putting in an appearance too, with a fire engine parked up in the Tyacks Hotel car park for children to look at before and after their race, so long as it isn’t called away to an emergency in the meantime.

Free face painting runs from 8am, and every competitor goes home with a goodie bag.

Behind the event

Tykes on Trikes is organised by BID Camborne and sponsored by the Tyacks Hotel, Fonehouse Camborne, Camborne Games, No 64 Bys Vyken Running and A Darn Good Yarn.

“This is its fifth year and we’re looking forward to another fun morning of kids’ cycling action,” said Anna Pascoe, BID Manager. “Trelowarren Street will be closed from 8.30am to 12.30pm whilst the racing takes place and every child competing needs to bring their own bike. Registration is free and simple, just email us and we’ll send you a short form to complete.”
