153 Mile Coast Path Walk to Raise Funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK

Most people see the South West Coast Path and think about a nice afternoon stroll with a flask. Rob Hopwood looked at 153 miles of it and decided to walk the lot.

Rob Hopwood has set off on a 153 mile walking challenge along the South West Coast Path, starting from Land’s End at the beginning of Dementia Action Week and finishing in Plymouth. He is aiming to raise £15,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Why he’s walking

Rob was inspired to take on the route by personal experience of the devastating impact of dementia. He is hoping the challenge will help bring us closer to a cure.

The scale of the problem is part of what drives him. If nothing changes, 1 in 2 people will be directly affected by dementia, either by developing the condition themselves, caring for a loved one, or both.

There is growing evidence that staying physically and socially active can benefit brain health, and Rob is passionate about raising awareness every step of the way.

The challenge ahead

It won’t be easy. The walk comes with plenty of obstacles, including Rob’s knees, long days on foot, and challenging coastal gradients. Despite all of that, his motivation remains strong.

Hannah Mumford, Senior Relationship Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“Rob’s hike is a remarkable example of turning personal experience of dementia into hope, taking on an incredible personal challenge. We cannot thank Rob enough for completing this epic challenge to raise funds in support of our work to find new treatments, preventions and one day, a cure.”

How you can help

Rob is open to speaking to news outlets along his journey and invites the local community to support him, have a chat along the route, and share his challenge.

You can donate to his fundraising page to back the effort.
