£663 Raised at Cornish Pirates Match – But YMCA Still £26k Short for Urgent Repairs
Support from the stands
Supporters at the Cornish Pirates match against Ampthill have helped raise £663.05 for YMCA Cornwall in Penzance. The collection was held during the recent fixture at the Mennaye, and every penny will go towards helping vulnerable young people in the county.
Helen Wilson-Prowse, speaking on behalf of the YMCA, said:
“Thank you so much for allowing us to be part of Saturday. It was a great win for the Pirates on the field and our sincere thanks are expressed to all those who kindly donated off it.”
Vital housing for young people
YMCA Cornwall provides supported accommodation for 16 to 24-year-olds in need of a safe place to live. With just 170 such places across Cornwall, their 50 flats in Penzance play a crucial role in keeping young people off the streets and in stable housing.
Helen added:
“Last year 20 of these homes were at risk as one of the buildings on the site needed a new roof. The work just had to be done ahead of the winter to prevent the loss of the building.”
Fundraising still ongoing
The roof repairs cost £76,000. So far, £50,000 has been raised, leaving a £26,000 gap that YMCA Cornwall is still trying to fill.
“It is support from such as the Pirates and their supporters that will hopefully enable us to cross the finishing line,” said Helen.
Every donation counts as the charity continues its push to reach the target.
