The car in the photo looks like it would think twice about the school run, let alone a lap of Europe. Two Cornwall youth workers are about to ask it to do exactly that, and they are doing it for a good cause.

Two youth workers, one questionable car

Taylor and Fay work with Kernow Connect, the Cornwall service run by children’s charity Action for Children. This year the pair are swapping youth club nights for a banger rally across the continent, driving a well-worn car the long way to Benidorm. They have named the trip Benidorm or Bust, and by the look of their chosen vehicle, an ageing Toyota on an ’07 plate, either outcome feels possible.

They are going in with their eyes open. Taylor and Fay expect long drives, breakdowns and a fair few unexpected moments before they reach the Costa Blanca, if they reach it at all.

Why they are doing it

The money they raise goes to Action for Children, to pay for resources, activities and experiences that young people in Cornwall might not otherwise get near. The pair describe youth work as something that offers support, safe spaces and opportunities, the sort of thing that can change the direction a young person takes. Kernow Connect runs youth groups in Camborne, Perranporth and Torpoint, so the cash raised stays close to home.

All of it is for charity, with a target of £1,000 on their fundraising page and donations already coming in.

How to follow and donate

You can follow the journey on their Facebook page, Youth Workers Gone Wild – Benidorm or Bust, where the breakdowns and detours should play out more or less in real time. To chip in, their JustGiving page is open now, with the £1,000 target and donations of any size welcome. Sharing the appeal costs nothing and helps too.

Whether the car makes it to Benidorm or gives up somewhere in the French countryside, the money reaches Cornwall’s young people either way.
