A Penzance resident has become the first person from YMCA Cornwall to be appointed as a Youth Ambassador in a national programme representing young people across England and Wales.

Dan, who lives at YMCA Cornwall in Penzance, travelled to London to attend his formal induction with the YMCA England & Wales Youth Ambassador Programme and take part in its national meeting.

What is the Youth Ambassador Programme?

The programme brings together young people aged 18 to 30 from YMCAs across England and Wales to represent the voices, needs and experiences of young people. Nominated by their local YMCA, ambassadors use their lived experience to help shape policy, attend national and international events, and act as spokespeople for youth voice within the organisation. The programme also offers training and development opportunities for young people passionate about creating positive change.

Dan’s Story

Dan has previously spoken openly about his personal journey through addiction and recovery. He will now use that experience to advocate for young people and contribute to change at a national level.

Speaking about his appointment, Dan said: “This opportunity means a lot to me. I never expected to be in a position like this, but knowing that my past experiences can help shape change for other young people is really important to me. I have an attitude of gratitude for all the YMCA has done for me.”

Kim Stuart, Assistant Housing Manager at YMCA Cornwall, said: “Dan’s journey has been remarkable. He has shown true resilience and commitment to his own growth, and this new role is such a positive leap. We are incredibly proud of him and everything he has worked towards.”

A Notable Endorsement

Geraint Richards, Duchy of Cornwall’s Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Ambassador and former High Sheriff, visited YMCA Cornwall in Penzance earlier this year and met with Dan during that visit.

Geraint said: “Dan is an inspiring young man and his lived experience and expertise will be used to great effect in helping other young people in Cornwall, in addition to developing his own career pathway. I am absolutely delighted that he has been appointed as YMCA Cornwall’s first ever Youth Ambassador and look forward to following his journey.”

Why It Matters

YMCA Cornwall say Dan’s appointment is a powerful example of the impact that a safe home, support, opportunity and having a voice can have. The organisation plans to share updates from Dan’s journey throughout his time as an ambassador.
