Jason Schofield doesn’t call himself a cyclist. That didn’t stop him riding 450km across Kenya in six days, on a challenge first set by his late son, Henry.

The Cavanna Homes Non-Executive Chairman has now completed the ride, raising money for Henry’s Project and Sarcoma UK to support young adults living with cancer.

Heat, rocky roads and 5,895 metres of climbing

Jason had little cycling experience before he signed up. Over six days he battled intense heat, rocky roads and gruelling climbs across the Kenyan landscape.

In total the route climbed 5,895 metres. That’s almost the same as cycling up Mount Kilimanjaro from sea level.

His toughest day packed 1,345 metres of climbing into just three hours, a greater elevation gain than the height of Ben Nevis.

But he was determined to finish it in Henry’s memory, and to raise awareness of the difficulties young adults face when they’re diagnosed with cancer.

Where the money is going

The funds raised will be split between two causes close to Jason’s heart.

Henry’s Project is a charity being set up to help people aged 26 to 40 who are diagnosed with cancer. It aims to give them support so they can keep as much normality in their lives as possible while going through treatment.

Sarcoma UK is a national charity working to improve outcomes for people affected by sarcoma, a rare cancer that develops in bone or soft tissue.

Sarcoma makes up less than one per cent of all cancer diagnoses. Research into some of its rarer forms is still significantly underfunded.

How to support Jason

The team at Cavanna Homes, which has been building homes across the South West for more than 100 years, has congratulated Jason on finishing. The firm is encouraging colleagues and members of the public to get behind his fundraising.

Donations can be made through Jason’s JustGiving page.

“Henry was the inspiration”

Jason said: “Henry was the inspiration behind this challenge, and remembering why I was doing it kept me going through some incredibly difficult moments.

“I’m certainly not a cyclist, so there were times when the heat, the climbs and the sheer distance felt overwhelming. But I was determined to see it through and hopefully raise both money and awareness for two causes that mean an enormous amount to me, my wife Sarah, and Henry’s brother Edward and sister Freya as well as the rest of our family and friends.

“Young adults facing cancer should have every opportunity to continue living their lives as fully as possible, and I hope the money raised will make a meaningful difference.”
