What’s changing
From January 2027, the UK will once again be part of Erasmus+. The programme opens up opportunities for school pupils, students, apprentices, adult learners, teachers and youth workers to study, train and gain experience across Europe.
Ann Higgins, chair of campaign group Cornwall for Europe, has written to CornishStuff calling on Cornish schools, colleges, businesses and community organisations to start preparing now.
“This matters to Cornwall,” she said. “For young people in Cornwall, where the cost and geography of travelling can be barriers, these opportunities could be transformative.”
More than a university exchange
Ann says Erasmus reaches well beyond students heading off to university abroad. In her view it can help young people develop skills, confidence and friendships, while giving Cornish schools, colleges, businesses and community organisations the chance to build lasting partnerships across Europe.
Where to get help
Organisations won’t have to go it alone. The British Council, the National Agency for Erasmus+, provides support and information. Ann also points to the Intercom network, which helps organisations make connections and develop projects with European partners.

The first funding round
The first funding round is expected to open this month (November 2026), and Ann says now is the time to get ready.
“The door to Erasmus is open and we should make sure Cornwall, with deep historic, cultural and economic connections to Europe, seizes this opportunity for its young people.”
