Young and Talented Cornwall has announced the launch of the Spirit of Trevithick Award, a significant opportunity to nurture the county’s future innovators in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM). This award is named after the legendary Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick and reflects Cornwall’s rich history of innovation.

The award offers young innovators a chance to gain both financial support and mentoring, aiding them in kick-starting their careers and realising their full potential. With Cornwall’s innovation sector spanning diverse fields such as geoscience, space technology, mineral development, and offshore power, the Spirit of Trevithick Award is set to celebrate and enhance the county’s reputation as a hub for scientific and technological progress.

Eligibility for this prestigious award includes residents of Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly aged between 16 and 23 who demonstrate exceptional talent and promise in STEM fields. Successful applicants will benefit from mentorship sessions with established Cornwall-based companies or innovators. These sessions are designed to provide guidance and first-hand advice, crucial for young talents to achieve their ambitions.

In addition to mentorship, award recipients can receive a cash award of up to £2,000. This funding is intended to support the development of specific projects or contribute towards essential equipment within STEM, aiding in the recipients’ career development. This financial support could cover various needs, from research trips to technical equipment or software.

Candidates for the Spirit of Trevithick Award are required to demonstrate their passion and determination through a personal statement of up to 500 words and provide a recent reference. They are also expected to act as ambassadors for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Applications for the award are now open, with the deadline set for 22nd March. The awarding panel will convene on 18th April to decide the successful candidates. This initiative represents a significant step for Cornwall in fostering a new generation of innovators and continuing the legacy of Richard Trevithick, the county’s famed engineer and inventor. Young and talented individuals in Cornwall are encouraged to seize this opportunity to advance their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) projects and aspirations.
